When you have the opportunity, I encourage you to experience history first hand. There's nothing more special than being in a sacred historical place, honoring those who gave their lives and thanking those who survived to carry on the mission.

Today we had the privilege to join Pearl Harbor survivors, WWII veterans, veterans & retirees from years past, active duty Service Members and the community to honor and remember the 2,403 Service Members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft.

It was especially sad to know that the last survivor of the USS Arizona, Lou Conter, passed away earlier this year. His legacy, along with many others who were at Pearl Harbor that day, lives on through the stories shared by loved ones and the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

I am grateful for each day I'm in Hawaii and can look out at Pearl Harbor, remembering and honoring these heroes.
