Budgeting can be daunting and stressful, especially if we are afraid that we are going to run out of money before all of the bills are paid.
I used to be the person that had to budget every penny. Can you imagine trying to chase every single penny at the beginning of the month? I would stress out if the numbers in the planned column didn't match the actual column--which happened all the time!
Then I changed my method. I don't budget every single penny anymore. I started to align my values with my spending and then plan my money out each month.
I make sure that my bills are less than we make. I decide ahead of time what we're going to save for the future, including retirement and upcoming expenses and set that aside.
Then I spend guilt-free. As long as I don't spend more than what I've planned that pay period or month, it doesn't matter how many pennies are in each category. I know that my bills are paid, my savings is done, my emergency fund is set and I can enjoy the rest. I also know that I'm not racking up extra debt. It's not always easy or fun to stay within the numbers, but it gives me peace at the end of the day.
A budget system may work for you to establish your bills, savings and spending buckets so that you don't have to track every penny either!
